Public confidence and the trial of Anwar Ibrahim

with 12 comments

Certain features of the trial of Dato’ Sri Anwar Ibrahim pose a serious challenge to public confidence in the government. Public confidence is essential to the basic functioning of government.

1) The trial is being conducted in an overwhelmingly politicized environment. Part of its context is the earlier trial of Anwar on the same charge, a trial which was perceived worldwide as politically motivated. We do not longer live in an insulated world.

2) Pre-trial publicity by the local mainstream media has been so blatantly unbalanced as to convey the impression that the media are pursuing a political agenda. Since the local mainstream media is either government owned or tightly controlled, this translates into the impression that the government itself has an interest in its outcome.

3) Many Malaysians believe that sections of the executive and political establishment have an interest in this trial. There does not seem to have been any attempt to remove this suspicion.

In such circumstances the principle that justice must not only be done but seen to be done is breached. As in the case of the constitutional crisis in Perak and in the openly illegal denial of oil royalty payments to Terengganu and now to Kelantan, we as Malaysians suffer when our Government loses credibility domestically and internationally.

  1. One must a real moron to think that this case is not politically motivated.
Just look at the time and resources (meaning tax payers’ money) used to persecute Anwar. Saiful accoumpanied to hospital and examined by 4 doctors. Has this ever happened to any other sodomized victim?
Even Islamic courts have been sidelined and suppressed and told not to summon Saiful.
They are demonizing an innocent man and his family and these are Muslims who pray 5 times a day.
They even use ‘Allah’ to cause disharmony in peace loving country.
UMNO is not made up of human beings anymore. UMNO, your name is SATAN.

  2. YB, thank you for your wise words. What you wrote reflects the sentiments of the people in the streets. Are there no other statesmen like YB in UMNO? It is a pity that such a great political party has degenerated to this. My condolences. At the same time, there is hope that there are more of the likes of YB around when the party, together with its fellow degenerates MCA, Gerakan and MIC get voted out by the people.

  3. Salam YM Tengku,

It is indeed a pleasure to read this article and to know that you are of the same opinion as the public at large. It is the voice of fair-minded leaders like you that many the silent majority in our beloved country are waiting hear.

While it is refreshing to note that a member of UMNO is sticking out with an opinion so contrary to the agenda of the party, i and i believe there are many more, are of the opinion that one knight cannot win a battle.

Nevertheless, we the silent majority rakyat would stand behind you should you in time to come decide to lead us. However, to quote Gandhi,”the future depends on what we do in the present”. So ponder no more YM, leave UMNO the lead us into greater heights.

  4. Salam YAB,

We need more outspoken leaders like you and we salute you. It’s great to know that there are still a handful of good leaders in UMNO. The rest are evil minded, corrupted and rotten to the core. Keep up the good work.

  5. If only! If only our lovely Country had not fallen into the evil and horrible trap of vile politicians that broke it to pieces by dividing it along racial and religious lines.

The purpose of that divide and rule policy? Money, money, money…. So power must be retained at all costs borne by the “enemy” and the Country.

If only it were not so, Malaysia would have been a lot richer than Singapore today.

So what do you do my dear Tengku?

Recently, you have at long last shown some of the fire I saw in you in your younger days.

You have the power that you did not in the days of Semangat 46. You have the power now.

Some well planned and well executed moves from you now will quickly change the course of Malaysian history and benefit generations to come. It is all ready to fall into your lap – if you prepare your lap.

You finally have the power – now.

    Your call my dear Tengku

  7. The case bares the credibility of the contending parties to corridor of power for the people and the World to judge. When the dust settles reality will sinks in for the people to choose the truth and the righteous.

However, People Powers will not reign without a Credible Leader to lead Malaysia as 1 country for all Malaysians to compete in the borderless world.

The time is ripe for the people and Malaysia to move ahead based on Rights over partisan politics.

    Hidup Rakyat! Hidup Malaysia!

With Credible Leaders who are Truth and Righteous.

  8. Malaysia is in serious trouble because the government has chosen to conjure up this Part 2 for everyone to watch. Malaysia can and will sink over this. It’s moved beyond Anwar. Are people aware of this?

Is there anything of value that Malaysia can offer which the other ASEAN countries can’t? The answer is a NO. The judiciary system is a shambles.

  9. I pray you will do the necessary when the time is right. I don’t believe you will remain in UMNO when this party is evil, trough and through.
YOU MUST JOIN THE OPPOSITION!!! MUST! MUST!
To remain in UMNO you will be committing the sin of omission.
    Why associate with evil?

  12. If Anwar Ibrahim is jailed, Tengku will be the best person to lead Pakatan Rakyat in 13th GE.
Upon ousting National Front coalition from Putrajaya , be the PM of Malaysia .

As corruption and abuse of power resulted in many ills in this country; with Tengku at the helm ,half of the problems we faced now will be solved if Tengku keeps to his honest and fair governance.
